Binance is investigating a reported security issue after crypto firms froze $2.54 billion in assets linked to the incident, a response that can block some tokens from moving while investigators trace them. The exchange has not confirmed that funds were stolen. The Associated Press report says Binance called it a potential security issue and that its founder, Changpeng Zhao, said it “does look like a hack on Binance.”
How were the funds frozen?
When a crypto asset moves, a blockchain records the transfer between wallet addresses. Issuers of some stablecoins can also restrict transfers from specific addresses. Circle’s USDC terms, for example, say it can block addresses from sending or receiving USDC and freeze associated tokens in certain circumstances.
That gives an issuer a way to stop some assets from moving after they have been identified. It does not reverse a completed blockchain transaction or establish how an asset first left a wallet. Binance said it was working with law enforcement, token issuers, blockchain intelligence firms and industry partners to trace assets and freeze additional funds. It reported a verified frozen total of $2.54 billion on Thursday evening and said that figure could rise.
Who froze the assets, and what is confirmed?
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said the company froze more than $800 million in currency associated with the incident, in coordination with law enforcement. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said Tether froze more than $1.5 billion related to a potential Binance exchange hack. The figures reported by the two issuers account for most of Binance’s stated total.
The distinction between frozen and stolen matters. A freeze means identified assets have been restricted from transfer; it does not confirm how much was taken or whether anyone accessed customer funds. Binance said its security teams were reviewing the information and that it had not confirmed any impact to user funds.
What has Binance paused while it investigates?
Binance said it temporarily suspended all deposits and withdrawals while it conducts security checks, freezes funds and works with law enforcement. Deposits bring crypto into exchange accounts; withdrawals send it out. Suspending both temporarily limits those routes while the exchange investigates, but it also means customers cannot move crypto through those functions during the pause.
The incident remained under investigation in the company’s latest statement. Binance said it would provide updates through official channels once it had verified information. Its published frozen total could change as investigators and industry partners continue tracing assets.
